    Try using SUPER instead.

personally, I wouldn't even install WinAVI on a PC that I loved.

Does it happen on EVERY rmvb file or just one.
If it is just this one, then the file is corrupt and you might struggle to encode it with anything.

If it is every file then either your real player installation is corrupt hence codec problems or the avi codec you are using is not compatible- have you tried using different encoders with winavi such as div x or xvid (with different bit rates) have you tried changing the audio codec used. Have you tried to convert the file to dvd using win avi- if you do this and get a useable dvd file then it is a codec/installation issue.

Other posters comments are not entirely useful in dismissing winavi (I use it cos its quick but if I want a good quality recode I will use something else) ....but as you are wasting a lot of time trying to encode a file using winavi then it may be better just to use a prog such as super to encode the file rather than waste lots of time on trial and error solutions.
Why bother converting an rmvb file to avi anyway- it wil be a pretty blocky file and it would be better just to do a convertion to mpeg with TMPGEnc for example.

You might try this method for RMVB to AVI. Should work better than WinAVI for RMVB to Xvid or other AVI types and it uses all freeware tools: https://forum.videohelp.com/topic289872.html The conversion would be as fast as your AVI type codec can encode.

If you need a sample RMVB to convert: http://homevideo.about.com/library/blPointPleasantVideoClips102505a.htm
