The one listed in the section doesn't work on my unit. It's below:

    Press "Setup"
Scroll to "Preference" using the Left/Right arrow key
Press "138931" and a popup screen will appear

Use the Up arrow key and select 0 for a region free DVD player
    Done.

I can get the "Setup" menu to come up, but I don't have a "Preference" tab, just General Setup, Audio Setup, Video Setup, and Exit. There is a field of 6 boxes on the header between Video Setup and Exit, but it when using the remote it just goes right past it.

    Can anyone help?

You have to be playing a DVD....then hit the STOP button TWICE.....then the SETUP button...this will take you directly to the Setup-Preferences page....then type in the number above(138931) and it should pop-up the window(not really a window just a box with the current region). Use the UP-DOWN arrow key to change the region code to '0' and that should make your DVD player region-free.

The steps to access the Preferences section are outlined on page 43 of the manual as well.

    hope this helps.

    region-free hack?

I used the following and it worked fine for me on a recent purchase of a Philips DVP3960

Power Up the unit with NO Disc in the tray.
    Open the tray
Press the SETUP Button on the remote control
Navigate to the PREFERENCES page using the Right Arrow Key
Press the DOWN ARROW one time to select
Press the 1 button on your remote control
Press the 3 button on your remote control
Press the 8 button on your remote control
Press the 9 button on your remote control
Press the 3 button on your remote control
Press the 1 button on your remote control
The current Region Code Setting will display
Use the UP/DOWN Arrow Keys to select the region required or '0' for All Regions
Press the PLAY Button on the remote control

    Good luck
