My gf's computer is a Compaq Presario. After installing a Windows XP update so that she could connect to our wireless network, her DVD RW drive stopped reading DVDs. Everythign else read perfectly....just not DVDs. On the off chance it was a fidelity problem we even tried cleaning it with a DVD cleaner, no change.

So we go to hp.com to use its troubleshooting function. It comes up with our firmware being too out of date to work with the latest XP update, and to download NEW firmware. Even helpfully provides a link to DL the new firmware we need, saying it is for the model DVD RW drive we told it we had. So we DL and run it.

Turns out it was the COMPLETELY WRONG firmware. No not "we gave the wrong model number" wrong, but "the website didn't have the RIGHT firmware, so they gave us the WRONG firmware to avoid admitting thier lack". Being obviously angry about this, we contacted tech support to get the RIGHT firmware.

But we all know how helpful tech support is.

So here I am, begging ANYBODY with the firmware for a HL-DT-ST DVD-RW GWA-4080N COR1 drive to post a link to it.

I've already tried the forums elsewhere, lots of firmware for slightly different models...but not THIS model

check THE DANGEROUS BROTHERS website for the firmware which will enable the drive to become region free. it's a 3rd party website for dvd burners and dvd roms.

Thank you for trying budz, but no dice. (and yes, it is a laptop)

The LG forum at CDfreakss.com has LOTS of information about drivers and firmware...but none for this model drive. Although it DID have a link to the LG customer help center that kept me busy for 20 minutes, finding everythign I could possible need for all the 4040, 4081, and 4082 models....but nada for GWA-4080N

And I already tried dangerous brothers before I came here. Got LOTS of flashing updates to the firmware for the 4080N serries, but unfotuneatly none of it was the COMPLETE firmware I needed...just "region-free" and other custmization updates. And yes, I'm including the firmware dump link page

But nto to long ago when we were toodling german sites we found a COMPLETE firmware for the gsa-4080N serries....not QUITE the model we have, but it was close. Tried it, and now we can at least OPEN the drive and read CDs...but we are back where we were before. It won't read DVDs, and won't burn CDs

Sorry the links didn't provide you the necessary firmware you needed. I know there are other members at this site that have much more experience with LG drives than I do. Hopefully someone else can give you some help. You can ask a moderator to change the title of your thread. It maybe helpful if your thread title was, "Need firmware for laptop dvdrw LG GWA-4080N". It could attract better attention of members who are much more familiar with LG drives.

As far as I know with regard to LG burners if it is flashed with wrong firmware it can render the drive to the point of not working correctly. Brands like BENQ & LITEON can be flashed back from the dead so to speak by using different 3rd party utilites.

Could you post the exact model of your gf's laptop? That way others maybe able to help as well.
