the video is 256 mb and i'd like to split the video into 3 sections so i can upload it on youtube. what would be the best way to split a vob file?

    OR

i could just compress it into 100 mb. or is that a bad idea?

Keep in mind that you also have a 10 minute limit to go along with the 100 mb filesize. If time is under 10 minutes use vob2mpeg then use riva flv encoder to encode to 100mb flv .

that first encoder gave me a choppy video with messed up sound. the second didn't install properly...lots of white boxes?

and yes, the video is less than 10 minutes.

What is the source video format ? G-spot should be able to tell you what it is if it is in an avi container.

Bearing in mind that YouTube will re-encode whatever you send to it, there is probably little to be gained by splitting the file up into three parts unless you want to annoy the viewer by making them find all the bits, or if there are three logical segments to the video.

If the source is an avi file, you may be able to use virtualdub in Direct Stream Copy mode to trim the file into parts, if you are happy to split on key frames or are happy to try out the beta version with smart encoding.

However it might be simpler to re-encode yourself to 320 x 240, Xvid with mp3 audio, under 100 MB in size. These are YouTube's recommended specs for submission anyway.

which program should i use to compress the video to 320x240?

if i compress the video to 320x240 at 25fps (recorded 30) all in 300kbps and change the audio to 65kbps, would youtube make the video quality even worse? should i compress it just enough to fit the 100mb, or all the way to youtube's standards?

oh and i THINK the dvd is mpeg 2? i don't know g spot, but it tells me mpeg 2 at the top right corner. is there a way to extract it as mpeg? then i could just compress it and upload it...i didn't realize how complicated it was to upload something into youtube

Post a screenshot from g-spot so we can see it.

You can use virtualdubmpeg2 to load an mpeg, resize it, then compress it. You don't have to change the framerate - I wouldn't as youtube is pretty US centric and uses NTSC friendly framerates. Also, going from 30 fps to 25 fps will make you video jerky.

    Sounds good to me.
Also looks like you'll have to de-interlace.

Try autogk, or avinet to automate the process.
I think Avi.net will be better in this case.

    As for editing.
Best to make cuts in mpeg with an mpeg editor like mpeg-vcr

if you're looking for more precise cuts.

But you're looking to just split the video in two i think.
So take the avi.net output and put it in vdub mod. Select range for two parts, splitting on an I-frame and direct stream copy.
Also just encode your other vid to the same dimensions, specs and append the video with vdub.

avinet did the trick. just reduced to 320 and it was under 100 mb. thanks for the super useful program!
