I have a 640x272 divx dvdrip. It's the best looking divx I have ever seen - it looks better than some of my commercial SVCDS.

I have no idea what the aspect ratio on this file is. The entire movie is played in the 640x272 (no black bars).

I want to convert the movie so it does have the widescreen black bars. This way I can place the subtitles I want in the black bar area. (I can't use the SVCD subtitle feature so this i why I need help).

Then I'll use VDUB w/the subtitle plugin to insert the subtiles and FrameServe into TmpgEnc. From what i've experienced the plugin places the subtitle at the bottom of the movie (black bar area), this way no video is overlooked.

Sorry if this doesn't fit this forum it was a multipart question and this seemed to fit most.

  2. I never frameserved from VDub, so that part I can't help you with. When you load the clip into TMPGEnc click Settings, Advanced, and set the aspect ratio to 16:9. To see if the clip looks good, hit File, Preview and make sure it isn't zoomed in and scroll through your video clip to see if everything looks good.

I am not sure why, but it isn't very popular to use a tool to calculate that stuff. I promote FitCD for a couple of weeks, but it doesn't help
PAL SVCD: resize to 448x312, expand frame to 480x576
NTSC SVCD: resize to 448x260, expand frame to 480x480

  4. To add Black Bars, and maintain same aspect ratio of video You can use the Smart Resize filter for Virtual Dub. Filter available from http://sauron.mordor.net/dgraft/
Open your file in VirtualDub. Load the Smart Resize filter.
In your Smart Resize dialog window,
Enter New Width and New Height as the size of your original video 640 & 272(or to figures suggested by Truman above for resize).
    Check the LetterBox image checkbox.
In the fields FrameWidth enter 640 and FrameHeight 480 (or to figures suggested by Truman above for framesize).
Load your subtitler filter after this.
