I am a newbie, so please be kind (unless I do something exceptionally stupid ).

Basically, I'm attempting to take mpg files (I'll get to avi sometime in the future) and burn them to a dvd using DVDAuthorGUI.

    My process:

    1. I use MPEG Streamclip to demux the video files to m2v. The m2v files are playable in Windows Media Player.
    2. I use FFMpegGUI to get the audio into AC3 files. The AC3 files are playable in WMP.
    3. I use DVDAuthorGUI to create a dvd image.
    4. I mount the image using Daemon Tools and attempt to watch it with WMP. I can hear the audio, but no video shows. Also, it sometimes locks up WMP and I have to manually close it down (using task manager).

I tried to search for my problem but wasn't able to find anything that seemed similar (at least to my inexperienced self).

Hopefully the code tags provide a scrollable box, because I'm posting the DVDAuthorGUI log:

    Code:
    DVDAuthorGUI 1.013 - 5/16/2007

The files that I am using are just random internet files (that we all accumulate) to test out how it works and to find the process that works. The longest is about 3 and a half min.

I know you aren't all DVDAuthor experts, but does anyone know exactly what I did to break it?

It looks like you set the standard to PAL when the source is NTSC, change it to NTSC in DVDAuthorgui. And I would try play the dvds with something else than wmp like media player classic or vlc media Player.

    editops...352x240 is dvd compliant...ignore that...

Okay, well the dvd is intended to play on a normal dvd player.

Anyway, I tried mounting the image and playing with Media Player Classic, and the video and sound worked, but the video kept freezing. It would play a few frames and then freeze for a few, etc, etc, fairly often.

I checked the m2v again, and they played fine without the freezing.

You are right Baldrick - the video source is NTSC but the finished disc believe it is PAL. I am surprised that DVDAuthorGUI allows this to be done. It does throw a warning in the logs, but continues on regardless. I don't know if this is the cause of the problem, but it should be fixed anyway.

Yeah, I'm setting DVDAuthorGUI to PAL, because I was under the impression that I'd need PAL if I wanted to play the dvd in an Australian DVD player, or rather, on an Australian TV.

    Oh, I'm in Australia.

So, what do I need to do to convert the video into a PAL compatible format?

Don't bother. The video is NTSC at 29.970 fps. You can't convert it to PAL 25 fps without throwing away frames. The results will be even worse than they are now.

I would bet you AU$100 that an NTSC disc will play happily on your TV. NTSC land is pretty format xenophobic. We are blessed in PAL land to be almost completely format agnostic. In fact, I believe you would have to go out of your way to buy a TV or player that would only handle PAL. Even if you have a 20 year old TV which can't handle NTSC, your player will be able to convert the signal to PAL.

I changed DVDAuthorGUI to work in NTSC and I can still play it while mounted as an image, although there's no difference. With Media Player Classic, it still freezes every couple of frames, and I still don't get any video, only audio with WMP.

Also, the log file that I gave was only for 2 of the videos, I've tried with all three of the test videos and for the other one, I get a lot of the same error:

What is this? Because it still plays in Media Player Classic, so what kind of error is this?

Post G-Spot screenshots of all the videos.

The second log still shows a warning indicating it is set to PAL with NTSC source.

If these were VCD files then they can be used as-is, with the only change being a re-sample of the audio up to 48 kHz. The demo versions of tmpgenc DVD author or DLP can both do this easily - assuming VCD source.

Something has to be odd with the video stream if dvdauthor keeps throwing the error "WARN: attempt to update tv format from ntsc to pal" I would try dropping the video_ts.ifo into windows media player classic, instead of mounting the iso. (just to rule out any problems with the iso, and/or daemon tools).
