  1. I have seen plenty of advice on ntsc to pal conversions when starting from avi, dvd or dv or something, but none so far which explain how to take a dvd ready mpeg2 from ntsc to pal.

If I just author the mpeg2 as is, I don't think my dvd recorder (philips dvdr610) is able to play the dvd. So is there any guide I have missed that you link so I can burn a pal dvd instead?

I'm hoping to avoid the "one stop shop" methods as all the advice I've seen so far reckons the loss of quality isn't worth the convenience

    TIA

I would be surprised if it can't, as the vast majority of PAL kit will play NTSC source.

That said, the first question you need to answer is what is the framerate ?

If it is 29.970 then there is no way you can nicely convert it to PAL without getting a jerky or blended results. You have to discard frames, and the results are never pretty.

If the framerate is 23.976 then the process is not difficult. Resize to PAL resolution using avisynth, encode at 23.976, apply pulldown using DGPulldown to change the playback from 23.976 to 25 fps, and author as PAL.

Finally, if the framerate is 29.976, but it has come from 23.976 source then you may be able to inverse telecine the video back to 23.976 progressive, and then convert to PAL as described above.

Or you could just give ConvertXtoDVD a try and see if you are happy with the results.
