Well, I've just tried uninstalling my old drivers and software and downloaded and installed the latest drivers and software from the Hauppauge website.
Same problem. It will only let me capture and record from within my WinTV software. So it looks as though this is the only recording option I have.
I'm gonna have to stick to the original plan now and author after recording from the WinTV software.

Will repost if I see anything. Else try capture uncompressed, and re-encode later, after editing.
