Thru much trial and error I have convrted an .avi file to .mpeg2. It will only play on one of my dvd players, not the other and there is no audio.
Frame Size is 720x480
I increased the audio to 10 times
23.976 fps-NTSC Film Rate
I am getting very frustreated. All I wanted to do was use vista moviemaker to combine about 400 .jpg files with 5 .mpg files and make a small movie that I could publish to a dvd and play on my TV.

You should use 29.97 for dvd rate. Also you really should author it with a dvd authoring program rather than an mpeg file if you intend to share it - not all players read straight mpg files.
by increasing the audio to 10 times do you mean boosting the volume?
For dvd audio you have to use either a wav audio file or a mp2 audio file. It must be at 48khz, the cd level 44.1khz will not work on a dvd. Also you can't simply use a mp3 and expect it to work - dvd spec doesn't allow for mp3 when you are making a real dvd.
Those two suggestions should help you get it working better.
Also movimaker is not a true dvd app. You should look into using a bonafide dvd authoring application.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw? -
Not if your destination is a true dvd. You have to convert it to wav or mp2 in order for it to be dvd spec and it has to be at the 48khz level.

Ok thanks. I just downloaded a trial program that converted the audio files to .wav. I replaced the audio in my project with the new wav files.
I now have to publish the project to my desktop so it will save as a .avi file.
Then I will use a converter program to convert it....what format do I convert it to in order to do what I want? DVD? VCD? SVCD? MPEG1? MPEG2?
Then I will burn it to a dvd -
Is Win DVD Maker a true authoring program? In order to do what I want to do, do I have to start all over using a different program other then Windows Movie Maker? If so, what would you recommend?

mpeg2 is dvd format. use 720x480 for best results on the resolution. the mpg file is what you load into your dvd authoring application to make your dvd and then burn it.

Thanks Yoda. It worked. I published the windows movie maker file to the desktop, it saved as an .avi file. I then used a conversion program to convert it to MPEG2 format. Then used Win DVD Maker to burn it to DVD. The DVD plays awesome in my progressive scan DVD player and shows well on my plasma TV.
It will not play however in my older DVD players.
Is there an older format i can convert this to so that people with older players can play it? -
Glad you got it to work finally
How old are the older players? If they are more than a few years old they may be very picky on media. Try using -r discs instead of +r. You may also want to burn at 4x instead of something higher.Donatello - The Shredder? Michelangelo - Maybe all that hardware is for making coleslaw?
