    what is the best codecs to use in virtualdub for compressing?

    Well, it depends.

    What is your source video?
    What is your goal with the video? Convert to a DVD? To video format for pc playback only? To format that you can easily share with other friends on the web?

    the source is a vob converted to mpeg.original source was vhs tape,yes i want to convert to dvd but first want to clean it up

    I use Lagarith, but you could also consider Huffyuv or the MSU lossless codec.

    That said, it also depends on what sort of clean up you are intending on doing. Virtualdub can frameserve, as can avisynth. Unless you are doing multi-pass VBR encoding, there may be no need to save to an intermediate file. I only save to Lagarith if I am doing multi-pass encoding because some filtering can take in the order of 10 - 15 hours per pass.

    Be aware that lossless encoding requires a lot of disc space. 2 hours of SD video from VHS source can eat 60 GB or more.
