QuickTime Player, VLC and mplayer can play .3gp files just fine.

When you drop the file on the window in ffmpegX, is the app able to get the parameters in the video/audio zones below the drop zone?

AMR NB 3GP audio should be supported by ffmpegX. When you drop the file into the window on the left, what does it say the video and audio are? ffmpegX is sometimes able to identify the codecs, even though it can't play or encode them.

If you click play and it doesn't play, then there is no point in trying to encode. If it crashes an encode, you have the option to view and save the log. Do that for a problem file and post the text for us.

The following is an example of a file that won't play or encode, but ffmpegX correctly identified the codecs for.

    The log is:

There's a little more nuance to that. The Play button invokes mplayer, which is only one of the decoders available. There may be files that ffmpeg or QuickTime can decode that mplayer can't.
