Some burning apps let you do this, but not all.

For instance Nero gives you this option when you create a data disc. (see below).
So does Fireburner. I don't know of any free software that does though.

But you can't edit or replace files once you've burnt it.
(You can use a CDRW with packet burning software, like InCD, but that's a different format.)

Well , to be compliant , you import the previous burnt session first .

From here , if a file is about to be replaced with the updated version or same name in use , you get a warning .

Yes if action is correct (replacing it with updated file) .
No , either review situation or place it in a new folder and continue .

Continue using multisession in the same manner , but remember when disc is nearing capacity , to import last session , add files and close the cd (finalize) , in order for any pc to view the content .

For CD-R multi-session, if you do it correctly, you CAN make the CD-R appear to have "erased" or "edited/updated" a file. In actuality, the original file is either left unlinked in the new session altogether (erased) or linked to a new and different additional file (edited/updated). An app like ISOBuster --could-- pick any one of those sessions and files to extract, so it's not truly erasing/updating like on a hard drive.

Most every even 1/2way decent burning app can do multisession. You just have to tell it up front at the beginning that that is what you want, and then you have to import the last session (every time you start a new session).

I feel that I should warn the original poster that multisession discs almost never play back correctly in standalone devices. This includes DVD players and CD players. Usually what happens is such devices only see whatever was part of the first session. As a result, I don't recommend that anyone make such discs unless they only intend to use them on PCs as PCs seem to be the only thing that always plays them correctly.

If you click that button, it IS multi session, until you "finalise" it.

Type "finalize" into Nero's help index.
