I'm trying to do what I think should be simple (but turned out not to be for me anyway!)

    Convert youtube clips to avi...

I downloaded the "videodownloader" addon for firefox. (Am able to download the flv files fine.)

Downloaded "mediacoder", and went through the motions to convert the file. It confirmes that conversion to avi had been done.

But, I am only able to play the audio. I confirmed that they had been converted to avi files, tried opening with several different players, and even tried a whole different way of conversion (vixy.com), and get the same issue.

This is probably an easy fix for someone; let me know what I'm doing wrong?

    Thanks!

AVI what? uncompressed, xvid, divx etc. Sounds like you don't have the codec, e.g. when you play an xvid video on windows media play without the codec installed, it plays the audio but no video. We need more info.

Use a utility like GSpot or MediaInfo to see what video codec the AVI is using, and whether or not it's installed on your system. Also, does the video play if you use a player that uses its own codecs, like VLC or mplayer?

Chances are, the video is encoded using the VP6(2) codec.

Or you could just get a FLV player and save all the hassle.
