I promised some people a Rage Against the Machine video under 500 MB with decent quality. I put it off for a few days and found that I can't convert without a huge loss in quality. But I found another similar length video in decent quality but 441 MB .avi file. What program is best or this?
Now, before I go on, here's the results of the stuff I tried myself:
VirtualDub - no clue how to make files smaller (just saved a 5 minute slice of the video, 4 GB file)
Adobe Premiere - too complicated for me
Blaze Media Pro - crashes
Windows Movie Maker - crashes
VideoWave 9/Roxio Easy Media Creator - "small" .avi files are over 10 GB
Nero Recode - only produces mp4 apparently, low quality
WinAVI Video Converter - "Access Violation at address 00000000, read of address 00000000" (verbatim)
Other regular converting programs don't have options for filesize, and spit them out 700+ MB.
Suggestions for the best way to produce a <500 MB video file that's decent quality (read: not visibly blocky at 320x240)?

Source is 4:3 NTSC DVD (.vob)
MPEG-2
10080 kb/s VBR
29.97 fps
720x480 -
Feed the VOB into AutoGK, fill in the final size, and let it go to work. However, often music/concert videos are very difficult to compress. They are usually interlaced, shot with handheld cameras, and have all kinds of flashing lights and other stuff going on. But AutoGK will do a much better job than you ever will.

sorry, didn't really see title
Use Vdubmod.
Ideally.
Download DGindex and avisynth.
Load DVD video into DGindex.
Create d2v file.
Load d2v with mpeg2source in avisynth.
resize in avisynth. Other filtering
Download Xvid codec.
Import avs file into vdubmod.
Under video is 'compression'
set it to xvid.
Configure xvid.
Set bitrate to 7-800.
Encode
You can import vobs to vdubmod, but one at a time.
then you'd append the encoded parts.
edit:
AutoGk yes.

The resulting mp4 file, can be converted to avi in a few minutes with Mp4Cam2AVI, without quality loss. -
