This is the first I'm seeing this and can't figure it out.

I have downloaded 4 separate files now - all screener versions of movies. The extension says it is an AVI file. However, Panasonic encoder won't encode it, and neither will tmpgenc. Tmpgenc just crashes after about 2 minutes, and panasonic wont encode at all. When I load it into Virtualdub or divfix, an error message says this is NOT avi file.

What could this possibly be? I even tried to re-name it and it didn't work. I also increased the priority of directshow under environmental settings. I have divx codec and the Nimo codec pack installed. Is there anyone who is having the same problem(ALI, royal tenenbuams). Could there be a copyright restriction on these? Is there a codec for that? The files originated from a VHS tape.

I have the divx codecs installed. 3.11 divx codec.

In case this helps, when I look at the "properties" of the file and then go to the "details" tab, it says "corrupted or unsupported format" but it says that for each file so they all can't be corrupted. I am missing a codec but I can't figure out what.

  6. I have the SAME problem with Royal Tenenbaums. It is a great quality and I too want to burn it.

The thing is, is that you can watch the file with Win Media Player. So it can't be a bad file can it???

I would really love to solve this problem! Glad it was posted!

Had similar prob not long ago solution was to d/l the Krystal codecs from the tools section from the left, uninstall your current codecs and install the krystol package, solved all codec dramas.
    Good luck

okay, what I'm finding out a little more here:

    1. when you load these files in Vdub1.c, it is reading them as an "ASF" file, however, as it is finishing loading I get either a (depending on the file)"coudn't locate decompressor WMV2" or couldn't locate decompressor for MP4S".

so, now I'm thinking this is an ASF file. So, I go to load the file into ASFTools to convert it to an AVI, and the files are not recognized in that tool as ASF.

so, now Im thinking that the video on the file is divx/avi format, but the audio is only compatible with ASF. There has GOT to be some new codec that can read these new type of files. Anyone else have any luck?

  13. I defenetly do not comply with the Guru procotol, but i'll try help, first I suggest you get the latest DivX v4.12 codec (www.divx.com) install it, and reboot your system.

If your file is an ASF, try getting VirtualDub v1.3c or TMPGEnc 12a, they are the only versions I remember that can open ASF files and encode them.

The file is not ASF - I don't know what it is. it has streaming audio(wma or mp4s) and I'm assuming Avi video. But encoders dont recognize it as a an avi or asf.

  15. But have you tried what I suggested ? using VirtualDub 1.3 or TMPGEnc 12a, not the new versions!

there has got to be a new codec out there, becuase this is the first time I've seen an aVI file with streaming audio on it(wmv2 or mp4s). Someone must have the codec.

  23. Looks like we lost a few days worth of posts. Hmmmm, no daily backups on this server?

Sefy, just in case you did not get the post here is a file for you to check out. Cannot convert to mpg.

    http://www.fearnotonline.com/vanilla-sky.zip

This is in the same format as the royal tenenbaums

  24. Is this the answer?

I have been doing some investigating on the newsgroups and found a little something called the NimoCodecPack.

    http://users.chartertn.net/bpearson

I have not tried it yet but have installed it.

So, I don't know if it works or not or fixed the problem we have.

I'll check out the board in the morning, if anybody has chance to try this before I do then please post on here to advise others if it works or not.

I wonder if there is a way to incorporate these codecs into TMPEG.

    Good Luck All!

  26. Ok guys i'm very disappointed, i've got the AVI file, seemed like a renamed ASF file, so I used good old TMPGEnc 12a, and it opened and encoded the file to VCD without a problem.

So either that is not the same kind of file, but this "Vanilla Sky" presented no problem using old TMPGEnc 12a.

If any of you have a diffrent file which you cannot encode, and hopefully it's smaller, let me download from you, and i'll see if i can encode it.

  28. Well, i've got the Vanilla Sky file, and the old TMPGEnc 12a had absolutly no problem opening and encoding the file (took around 5 hours on my T-Bird 1g) I did not install any additional codecs, just those that came with DivX 4.12, and I believe this AVI is simply a renamed ASF, which is why VirtualDub and the new TMPGEnc will not open it.

I just tried the Royal tenenbaums, again, with tmpgenc 12a and after 18 minutes it crashed. I tried Black Hawk Down too, and same thing. So if you can try it out with this file, that would be great. let me know if I can download it to you, or if anyone has it on a site please send to sefy.

I'm assuming Sefy, that if you can do it with the Royal Tenenbaums, then there is something wrong with the codecs we have installed. I guess we'll cross that bridge when we come to it.
