avi to mpeg quality is terrible

Hi all,
Im trying to make a dvd from some avi files that I have but the quality after conversion is always terrible compared to the original.

And im wondering is this because of something im doing wrong in the conversion or is it because i recorded them to avi and should of recorded to mpeg initially?

I always select keep same quality optinon when converting. but it doesnt help theres always a really noticeble drop in quality. is it because of the codec that mpeg2 uses. can u get the one the movies use to get such gr8 quality?

What software are you using?
How long is the avi file?
How much bitrate are you using when encoding to MPEG2?

You need to start with good quality and then use a high enough bitrate to preserve it when you encode. You should be able to get about 2 hours of video onto a DVD with good quality.

Most MPEG codecs work essentially the same, and the movie studios have used the same ones that are available to us. I don't think that's where your problem is.

But it would help if you told us what type of AVI you started with and what process or program you used to produce your DVD.
