When i import a WMV file to windows movie maker
    i got this error message:
"The file D:\movie\Untitled41.wmv cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

How shall i deal with this?
I mean this is a WMV file. I have tried converting into MPEG,ASF,AVI..
But still i got this error message.
The video is playing well in Windows Media Player.
So i wonder why it cannot be imported to Movie Maker.
    Can someone give me suggestions?

Are you sure it's wmv video? just because it's named .wmv doesn't mean that is is wmv video. Try identify the video and audio codec with mediainfo.

Have you tried GSpot using the 'proposed ccodec solutions and tests' function at the bottom left?

  6. OMFG! I have the same problem with Windows Movie Maker! PLEASE HELP!

    This is what I get:

"The file C:\Documents and Settings\All Users.DESKTOP\Desktop\_dvcr003.mpg cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

Even though that I use GSPOT and it says that I don't need a friggin' codec! What am I doing wrong here?!

This is what GSPOT said when I analyze the file: (output)

    no codec required?
how about using Mediainfo to check this mpg file
    ?
then just click on the "go to video codec page"
    and download the required codec

We all love to help, but next time please leave out the F, especially if it comes right before G.

Have you tried clicking on the litttle blue buttons labeled '1' on the bottom left of GSPOT? They MAY tell you what GSPOT sees. You can also click on the elements of the displayed path for more info.
    oh the movie never ends...

  9. Hey guys, I downloaded MediaInfo and it says that the video stream is YUV format and the audio stream is a PCM format but I've downloaded the YUV codecs from the website it recommends and I still get the same old crap! I never used to have this problem and I really want to upload my movies to Youtube. Any suggestions?

Looks like raw avi or a similar raw format. Try opening it in VirtualDub Mod.

  12. I installed huffyuv and I still get the same error message.

  13. Alright I can open the AVI file in VirtualDub Mod but when I try to save it and export it to WMM it still gives me some error crap. Now it says the file is corrupt.

  14. well try to reencode it with the codec huffyuv and first don't forget to pick the rgb 24bits mode in video>color depth

This codec is lossless so you shoulnd't get problems

Just try it with like 5 sec of videos

    good luck

I've seen this kind of file before...

    Here's probably what happened:

Original file was opened in QT Pro.
Then, saved as "BMP" codec type, but instead of usual MOV file, was save in AVI container (thinking, "this will make it compatible with PCs too").
But it won't (at least not easily).

AFAIK, the only way to get this back to something recognizable is reopen it in QT Pro (may have to play with the versions, too) and export back out to something more standardized.

    HTH,
    Scott

  16. I don't see where I can access that menu. After I installed Huffyuv, where is the program physically installed to so that I can access that menu? I tried to select YUV format in WinTV2000 but no matter what I toggle or select to drag into WMM it gives me the same exasperating message.

  18. I've got a suggestion yes

    download Xvid latest release(zip file)
In it there is a an executable called AviC.exe
run it and change the four cc of your video, see example below
    http://img512.imageshack.us/img512/5563/test2ok6.jpg

then try to open it with WMM
    Quote Quote
  19. It says "Setup cannot copy the file xvidfw.dll. Ensure that the location specified below is correct, or change it and insert "Xvid MPEG-4 Video Codec Install Disk' in the drive you specify." Then it did let me install it but I have no idea where to.

  20. I did not see any AviC.exe files in that directory...

The answer was given, I don't understand why you aren't making use of it...

READ AGAIN: I've worked with these kinds of files before.

  22. As I said before, I cannot find the AviC.exe file after I download that file that themaster1 suggested that I download. I am trying to make use of it, but in the manner that he explained it to me, I am not getting results.

  23. Ahhhh I just downloaded it from a different source and now it's working. There must have been a corrupt file or I must have downloaded it from the wrong place or something. Standby; I'll run it and see how it goes.

  24. Alright I set it exactly like you said and restarted WMM and it still says, "The file C:\Documents and Settings\Matthew Joseph Dennn\Desktop\WinTV Capture.AVI cannot be imported because the codec required to play the file is not installed on your computer. If you have already tried to download and install the codec, close and restart Windows Movie Maker, and then try to import the file again."

Could try QT Alternative, or just shell out the $29...

    Scott

  28. There has to be a way of fixing this without shelling out $29 bucks for QTPro that might solve the problem. It used to work perfectly! Now since I reverted back from Windows Vista Ultimate this crap started.
    Quote Quote
  29. Well i don't like to say that but if QT can save you i'd suggest to take the illegal route to get QT pro.And that's where i stops or i'm'a get kicked i believe

I don't see what QT could do but ..but why not

I don't want you to get a piece of software that you'll end up not needing, so I'm uploading a sample of a bars-n-tone clip that is encoded just like I've been talking about. You could then DL and install a copy of QT (not the Pro) just to see how it (and probably nothing else) can decode this. Since it isn't the Pro, you won't be able to export/convert/save, but at least you'll be able to tell if this is similar to your experience, and that you might be able to decode...

You can get the file at: http://www.prairie-production.com/TestBarsClip.avi (This will be available for ~2weeks)

    Good luck,

    Scott
