    Hello
So last year a downloaded a movie and it was fine then. Too big to put onto a disk, so it was split into 700 and 145 MB pieces. Everytime before I delete someting from my hard drive after I put it onto a disk, I check to see if all went well. Nothing was wrong with the damn thing back then.
Now when I try to play the 145 MB piece. Nothing.
WMP11: "Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file."
Realplayer 10.5: "Cannot play back the file. The format is not supported."
    VLC: Nope
Windows Media Player Classic: "Cannot render file"
Importing into Windows Movie Maker: "... .avi could not be imported. The selected file is not valid or is corrupted."

I have tried using SUPER Convertor [build 21] to convert. I cant get it to an .avi I get an error message pop up :ffmpeg.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." Then the file converts really fast, and cant be played.
I can get a SUPER converted .asf file to play for about 10 seconds, but then it stops, in both WMP11 and VLC. With no audio.
I get this when I do a Multimedia Anaylsis from Super :

    General #0

If I right click, properties and ask for a summary I get : "Summery properties are unavailable for the selected sourse(s)."

I have tried using freeware fixing corrupted file programs DC DVD Data Recovery and Video Inspector. Nothing. They try but dont fix anything.

I have tried loading it into DivX Convertor: "Unsupported File type The Divx Converter does not support the file type. Please make sure the input video is a supported input for the DivX Converter.
And I have tried to play it with DivX Player: " This file cannot be opened Failed to open file. Please check that it is a valid video file." The 700 MB part works in this and all other players btw.

There is also another video on the same disk, and that is working just fine.

The 700 MB piece has sound, but the 145 piece does not. From the Super Anaylsis thing I found that there was no audio stream [gah!]

I have tried using those codec finder things that tell you what codecs you need ... Nope.
I downloaded a whole pile of random popular codecs, still no luck
I have MediaInfo and I think that it gives a list of codecs I have on my computer, but is hella long so I wont just now. But maybe I have that button wrong.

Ok so that is about all the info that I can think of. Need any thing else?
I am new to all this stuff so I am not too sure if I am doing everything that I can.

So any suggestions on how to get this thing playing? Its driving me insane.

    Thanks for any help!

A long list of codecs usually indicates you have probably installed 1 or more codec packs which are known to cause problems. I think you need to clean out all codecs, use g-spot to analyze your videos and only install the codecs you actually need.
Although this won't fix your problem if the file is damaged, it will eliminate conflicting codecs as the cause.

    Split ?

With what program did you use to split the file ? , it may need rejoining in order to play as a completed file as it was originally downloaded .

Some tools , used to split files , cause these issues .

  4. You are saying you made two CD's, confirmed that both worked OK, presumably in some sort of playback device, and now the second does NOT work?

The data got corrupted. It is that simple. The corruption could take any form possible, repair may or may not work. Problems in creation or format are all out the window if it did work after creation.

There are a couple of progs which can view partially downloaded files, SFAIK these ignore file headers and just try to display available video frames in a file. One of these might help you, sorry can't think of a name right now. I'll post back if I recall.

Bjs is probably right - it sounds very much like you used a regular file splitter on the original file (rather than converted it into two separate, stand-alone AVIs), and are now trying to play the second fragment, thinking it'll play by itself.

If that's the case, the 145MB fragment won't have the AVI header information it needs to play - it's all in the first file (the 700MB one). They'll need to be re-joined into the full 845MB file before you can play it. Otherwise, the 145MB file is just random data, to anything attempting to play it.

"Das_Experiment.avi" appears to be a copyrighted film. If not, PM me and I will unlock this thread.
