larger file size from .avi to h264

I converted an 173mb .avi divx episode to h264 using SUPER with this guide http://www.dvd-guides.com/content/view/143/59/

I followed the instructions verbatim but my h264 file is 10mb larger than the .avi file. I know h264 is supposed to be smaller so I'm not sure why it's actually larger than the original .avi.

The .avi bitrate was 1009kbps so I chose 960.
I kept the same resolution.
Frame rate was 23.976 so I chose 23.98.
I kept the audio the same at 48khz, 128bit, 2 channel.

Any thoughts?

Bitrate is bitrate!

You can get better compression with h264 but you haven't compressed.

1009kbps -> 960kbps is the same.

Super is doing a single pass encode.
Can't expect a single pass encode to be on target...
Check your target and you'll see super has overshot a little.

Audio bitrate is probably not hit either btw.

p.s. ahh and i don't think directshow should ever be ticked.

I personally don't think you will see enough of a reduction in file size to justify the loss in quality of another conversion. Unless you have to convert to meet specs for a specific use, I'd leave it as it is.
