My friend made a movie a couple years back in which i helped in copy it and distribute it. His hard drive crashed a few weeks ago and now he has none of the source files. The only remaining disc of this movie is very scratched up. Ive been working on ripping the dvd to just my HD for the past week but ive finnally hit a wall and dont know where to turn.

The disc is scratched up so i cannot make a nice and easy ISO of it. I tried multiple programs for that. I then tried to just copy the VOB files i needed. There are 3, the first 2 copied fine, but the third one is where most of the programs i try start to crash. Luckily the corrupted part of the disc is where the extra footage is, so i dont mind not having that. I believe using smart ripper i tried to copy over the third VOB file and, as expected, it crashed. However, it did not delete the third VOB file so i technically had the movie i wanted (but for some reason there was no audio). I used VOB2MPG to convert it a MPG. When i tried playing the movie, i found the only player that worked was windows media player. Winamp, powerDVD, quicktime, nero player, they all said it was corrupted and wouldn't play it.

I then ripped the audio off of the dvd fairly easily and now i have a demuxed dvd. The audio/video was not synced up right so i tried to load them both up in a video editor, pinnacle studio, to try to sync them up and hopefully export it to one file. No such luck. The editor would not read the mpg file that i had.

I believe my MPG that i have is corrupt, so i tried to convert it to a dvd mpeg2 with TMPGenc. TMP says my mpg is corrupt also.

My question is: Using any of the files i already have (the VOB files, the corrupted but playable mpg with the .wav audio, or the corrupted dvd itself) how do i copy this dvd? i want to try to convert the corrupted mpg into a mpg so that it will be readable by most progams. I dont understand why windows media player plays the mpg and nothing else does. Ive tried DVD shrink, copy2dvd, smart ripper, TMPGenc, TMPGenc authoring. My computer is now loaded with a bunch of trial software ive been using to hopefully get this thing to work.

Any help is appreciated, i will be checking this thread often so feel free to ask any questions and they will get a timely response.

    Thanks
