  1. I snagged an MKV file and used a Windows-based extractor to get the raw H264 file, but I can't figure out how to convert it to AVI. All I want is the video, so I couldn't care less about the audio.

How do I do this? ffmpegX isn't doing jack with it.

Is this a Mac question or a Windows question? If it's Mac, I can move you to that forum.

avc2avi isn't just a windows app. Should compile fine under OSX. You will find avc2avi.c in x264's tools directory.

mkvtoolnix is also available for OSX: http://www.bunkus.org/videotools/mkvtoolnix/macosx/mkvtoolnix-1.6.5.pkg.tar.bz2 so no need to use windows there either.

Have you tried to use my wonderful friend's app,
Merkonk's MoKgVm2DVD, on the mkv file?
    or perhaps Visual Hub?
