    whats is the best, as well as the most "inexpensive" way for me to join one set of 5.1 computer speakers over two computers.

  2. PC put surround sound on s/pdif connector, typically a minjack.
    s/pdif is an encoded signal on a single connection.

    So, you most likely can use minijack to RCA connector to get both PC output into a two-in/one-out RCA switch box, then drive your 5.1 speaker's local ampilfier, to get your surround sound.

    Those cables and switch box should cost $15.00 or less.
