My new HP pavilion PC makes DVD-r videos that freeze and skip on my home Panasoic DVD Player. This same video was created on my old PC w/ a Sony burner using TMPenc programs and that same video created on the old PC works fine in the Panasonic DVD Player. I updated the driver and had no success. I took a good video that plays on the Panasoic home player and disk copied it on the new HP PC and it created a problem disk that freezes and skips on the Panasonic home player. The problems start about 20 minutes in an hour DVD-R. Is it a tracking problem when it burns the tracks? Are the new HP burners different? How do I resolve this?? Thank you.

The original poster on that thread also had a HP dvd burner as well. What brand of dvd media are you using? Use DVDINFO PRO or DVD IDENTIFIER to find out the media id of the dvd discs that you're using. If you haven't used VERBATIM DVD MEDIA try that first. Most times freezing and skipping is because of low grade media like MEMOREX & TDK which media id is RITEK or CMC. -
The disk I'm using now is Verbatam that I bought at Sam's club. The verbatam disk works fine when burned on my old PC with a Sony buner, but when the same verbatam of disk is burned on the new HP PC burner, I then get the problems/

I suspect it is a hardware issue. The first step would be to ensure the drive has the latest firmware. If the firmware doesn't resolve the issue, and you verify the media (working & non-working) have the same media code, which shouldn't be an issue with Verbatim, then I would recommend getting a different burner.

as mentioned already upgrade the firmware of your HP burner. if that doesn't solve the problem then buy a new dvd burner. Get a PIONEER 112D or LGH42N.

more details:
HP Tech support gave me intructions to uninstall the drive thru Device Manager, and then reinstalled the with the latest driver. It did not fix it. This burner also has a laser labeling function so I reinstalled the Lightscribe Host software. That did not fix it. Are these the firmware you guys were taking about????
Also want to note that DVD movie the HP burner burns does play OK on itself (the HP player/burner called HL-DT DVDRRW GSA-H2ol s853) and a LG player, but on stand alone player Panasonic DVR-RV32 (192khz/24 bit D/A converter) and a Toshiba player it freezes and skips. Again, the same movie made with the same data and software on a different PC w/ a Sony burner makes a disk that plays on all the machinces above and that is obviouslly what I want. -
No, not the drivers...firmware. It's basically a data file that is stored in the burner that contains media and burning information. This information is used by the drive to know how to burn different types of media.
I can't reference the model number you listed above. You may be able to get more information from the HP website using your pc model and s/n number. You could also try cdfreaks.com.
Although your best bet is most likely to just get a new drive.Google is your Friend -
What burn speed did you use? Was it the same on the old PC as the new? If you're burning 4X on the old, and 16X on the new - it might produce the results you describe.

ImgBurn can identify (hopefully) your burner and search for firmware for it under the drive tools section of the program.
I believe DVD Decrypter has this same functionality.
Believe me, it's easier than trying to track the shit down using the sometimes incorrect information & model numbers from the PC maker and/or what it says on the sticker on the burner."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

Insert the disc in the drive before opening up TMPGenc writing tool. You should then see the different writing speeds available for your drive in a drop down window.

I finally made a burn that works by taking your advice and turning the burn speed down to 4X. My origianl TMPGEN author will not let me lower the speed so I downloaded the new trial version of TMPgenc author and was able to lower the speed.
Do I still have a deffective drive? This is a new drive and should I not expect it to burn movies at 8 or 16X? What is the norm for people like you to burn? My guess it is not 4X?
1) Should I exchange the drive?
2) What is the simplist writing tool? -
Burn speed is dependant on more than the burner's capability.
It also depends on the media. Good luck burning a 4X disc at 16X, it ain't gonna happen."To steal ideas from one person is plagiarism; to steal from many is research." - Steven Wright

1)So most DVD disk are advertised at 4X?
2)if that is the case my burning is then probably oK? -

Your burner is probably fine. If you continue to have burning issues you have 3 choices. 1) update the drives firmware (the firmware controls burn speeds and media compatibility) 2) try different media - not all -R media is the same, and try a name brand such as Verbatim which is known as one of the best 3) get a new burner
This is all a matter of trial and error. Not all media works well in all players. You will need to find a brand and type that work well with yours. Also keep in mind that the same problem affects standalone players. Some drives and standalone players are just picky about the type of media they support.Google is your Friend -
Most media now is rated at 16x with some 8x still available if you look around different vendors. Generally I burn 16x media at 12x or 8x depending on media quality and burn 8x at 8x or 4x depending on media quality. I'd think you should be able to burn 16x Verbatim at 12x with good results, but firmware update may be needed for best results. Use an info tool such as ImgBurn or other to identify the drive correctly in order to obtain correct firmware as suggested by Xylob the Destroyer. I have a LiteOn external burner that failed to burn Verbatim 8x -R resulting in over 60% coasters with original firmware, but firmware update resulted in no more coasters with all media tried since.
