I'm really hoping someone can help with this. I've been trying to backup all of my DVDs for my kids as I'm tired of them trashing them. I'm using Recode 2 to do this. I've been scouring the net over the past few days looking for the best program do do it. I've tried Divx, and others, but seem to have the best luck with Recode. My question is this. when i'm selecting the settings for audio, it only allows me to use Stereo, not 5.1 Dolby Digital. That is what i want NOT, stereo. I tried AutoGK last night and had audio sync problems, and I don't want to be using mutiple programs to do this. Is there a reason that the 5.1 Audio is greyed out? If so I have looked everywhere for some way to turn it on, and see screenshots on the net with it not greyed out. I'd appreciate any help or recommendations you all have.

    Thanks,

    Rayz

I think you need to install the AC3 codec on your PC.

    Hi,
There is no support for multi-channel AAC in Nero, because most software and definitely almost no hardware would support it. it has nothing to do with having an ac3 codec on your computer. If you MUST have 5.1 sound back up your DVD's to DivX or XviD with your original ac3 soundtrack intact.

Alright. I'm trying to do it now by using VirtualDubMod. I was hoping for a easy one click solution to do it, but it seems like that is just not to be. Hopefully this will work for me like it has for others. AutoGK didn't work. audio was way out of sync, and nero looked better to me as well.

  6. You need to change the default profile to Cinema. Once done, the 5.1 option will show and you can get Dolby 5.1 audio. Works for me.

Ok. After following the guide to go DVD to XVID with AC3, and 3 hrs of encoding, it ended in failure. the audio was completely out of sync.

    Danno,
I've tried that, i've tried every option on the screen, and nothing unlocks the 5.1-Channel sound. I've tried installing NERO on a totally separate PC in the house, and it's the same thin. 5.1 is grayed out. GMaq said it doens't support AAC. If that is so then how are you able to select it? I've also seen other screenshots with the ability to select 5.1. I truly hate to recode all these DVD in strictly "Stereo" sound when they all have 5.1 soundtracks. There has to be a surefire way to do this. Recode is very easy and good results, but this 5.1 issue has me stumped. I've installed the AAC codec that was mentioned above as well, but that did nothing at all. Any other ideas?

    Try to do this:
    1. Recode to Nero digital as usual. Do not bother with a sound. Let it be stereo.
    2. Download Mp4Cam2AVI (freeware, no install). Open your new mp4 file, choose "No audio" under audio format and click Start. You'll get a new AVI file (there will be no recoding of video).
    3. Download Vobedit (freeware, no install). Open your original DVD (Vobs). Demux audio stream only. Thus you'll get original ac3 from your DVD.
    4. Download VirtualDubMod. Open your AVI. Under Video, choose "Direct Stream Copy". Then go to Streams > Stream list > Add your ac3. Now go to File > Save as.

I've just tried one of my DVDs. I have imported it in Nero Recode and the option for 5.1 audio is NOT grayed out.
So, I suppose that you do not have proper license/version for Nero.
What is your version of Nero and Nero Recode?
I believe that you should have got Nero Ultra or Premium in order to have all options enabled.
Otherwise there is a multichannel plugin available from Nero.
Nevertheless, the procedure which I described previously is fast and easy, and you would get an AVI file with Nero Digital video quality, original ac3 5.1 audio from your DVD, no sync issue, and the file will be playable on standalone DVD/DIVX player.

I have the lastest version of NERO. just to double check, i even uninstalled my version and installed the lastest trial version from the website. Even doing this the option for 5.1 was greyed out. where do i get that Multichannel plug in from? Is it on NERO's website? If so I'll get that and see if that fixes the problem. I would have thought that the plug would have been part of Nero Ultra or Nero Ultra Enhanced.
