  1. Hi All,

I have a NTSC AVI clip that I ran threw Virtual Dub, to clean up. Now that I have the avi clip in Sony Vegas 7.0e, I want to export/render to mpg for DVD. I'm using the Debugframeserver to Cinema Craft Basic, and was wondering what colorspace is used for commerical DVDs? Cinema Craft gives me the choice of either RGB or YUY2. I know the video clip is in RGB but don't know if if it will show better on NTSC TV/LCD in YUY2?

    Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Matt

Vegas only works in RGB, CCE works in YUY2, so in your case it probably doesn't matter wich you choose. If you were using TEMPGEnc, then you should choose RGB24.

You should also disable "Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" in the Vegas settings............

I do have "Ignore Third Party DV codecs" checked, hopefully this is the same thing.

    Thanks.

DVD like most distribution formats uses 4:2:0 (YV12) following the ITU-Rec_601 colorspace standards set back in the 1980's for 8bit and 10bit digital video. The analog YPbPr version is standardized in SMPTE-240.

This guy has a good overview description of the macro problem.
He leaves out the 0-255 vs. 16-235 luminance conversion issues.

It illustrates why an overall workflow needs to be designed. Programs like Premiere do a good job managing levels and colorspace from camcorder formats to DVD or ITU-601 even though internal processing is in RGB. Going out to external processing or import from need analysis and testing. I tend to favor empirical testing to ID problems with levels or color space. I use standardized test signals.

HDTV standards use the newer ITU-Rec709 YCbCr colorspace revisions that are better matched to modern displays.

"Ignore 3rd Party Codecs" in vegas is only related to the dv codec ... sony suggests leaving this checked otherwise you would be generally using the MS dv codec ...

the debugframeserver has the choice of color space output --YUY2 would be what i use to cce

Frameserve as YUY2. CCE will convert to YV12 for DVD MPEG2.
