    Your source file looks like SVCD format.
    Do you need any special compatibility for this mpeg-4 file (like a stand-alone mpeg-4 player/iPod/PSP)?
    When you say 'it does not work', what result (if any) do you get? Do you get an output file at all, and if so, what size is it?
    Does the ffmpegX Progress window say Finished, Failed or anything else?
    What preset did you select in ffmpegX? Did you change any of the settings in the tabs after selecting the preset, and if so, which?
    Can you post the Log of a non-working conversion? (Press the blue "i" button in the Progress window to open the Log.)

    Thank you for your comments;
    I try to convert MPEG2 in MPEG 4 so that it can be read on my mac and imported in Imovie.
    When i say it does not work, i mean that that the conversion begins but end quickly by generating a 0K file.

    What preset did you select in ffmpegX?
    A possibility is that your chosen preset has Decode with QT activated by default. This activation will only work for MPEG-2 files if you also have the QT MPEG-2 Playback component. If you de-select Decode with QT, then you may get different results.
    To narrow down other possibilities, I hope you're willing to answer the other question(s), too.

    iMovie will convert anything that it can read to DV anyway, so you might as well convert to DV in the first place.
