BTW, beautyschool, you might want to check your DVD drive if it's running slower now. After 6 failed reads, they usually revert to PIO mode, which will slow them down quite a bit.

To check DMA/PIO mode within Windows:

    Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers.

From there, right click on one of the channels and choose 'Properties>Advanced Settings'. All drives should be DMA mode. The 'Current Transfer Mode' for Hard drives is usually DMA 4-6 and DVD burners DMA 2-4, DVD ROMs usually DMA 2. If you see any in PIO mode, that can slow things down.

Changing them back may be easy or complicated. First see if you can change them in that window. If not, I usually uninstall the channel the drive is on and let the OS reinstall it. This will usually take a reboot. This will not damage any files on the computer.

I've ripped Apocalypto with RipIt4Me and it flags an error in the main VTS which requires that a mock strip is carried out with IFO edit which I've done. After that, shrinking with either DVD Shrink or DVD Rebuilder is quite straightforward.

Be warned that the "Becoming Mayan" featurette uses a disproportionate amount of bitspace (over 1 Gig on the original) so either blank it with VobBlanker, re-author as movie only or encode it at maximum bitrate. Anything less and the featurette breaks up into pixels. The deleted scene can be encoded at Half D1 with no noticeable drop in quality.

I used DVD Shrink 3.2 and had no problems with Apocalypto in full disc mode or just movie. Maybe I just got lucky.

When you say "full disc mode" did that include DTS audio and commentary track?

  10. I used DVD Shrink 3.2, just movie mode and I get the directors comment over top of the movie Apocalypto, throughout the whole movie.... Anyone know how to get rid of the directors comment because I also have the same problem with "Pans Labyrinth"???? It is very annoying especially after 1/2 hour of shrinking and burning only to find out this problem.

Yes, put a tick in the box which says "AC-3 5.1-ch Uspecified" and delete the tick next to "AC-3 1-ch English - Director's Comment", Like so:

Every so often a newly released movie will have copy protection that "throws off" the usual suspects (i.e., the popular DVD ripping programs). This may be the case with APOCALYPTO.

DVDFabDecrypter is free and IF the current version cannot deal with APOCALYPTO then it will be updated to deal with it perfectly.

Sometimes this might take a week or two after such a release.

So keep your eye out for a new release of DVDFabDecrypter. Who ever is behind this program does a good job of updating it to deal with problem discs like APOCALYPTO ... assuming it is a problem disc ... in general that is.

Sometimes you get a disc that is just a "bad" disc and it can't be properly ripped. Maybe it was dirty and cleaning it will work. Maybe it has a bad scratch (even though it may not be easily visible) etc.

    - John "FulciLives" Coleman

    P.S.
I keep forgetting that the new(er) free version is now called: DVDFab HD Decrypter
