Edit: See my post below about the free shipping.

At checkout you specify the shipping method, which has a free USPS option. Unfortunately it's not noted anywhere else, even when you use their "estimate shipping costs" which defaults to UPS.

It seems to add $6.50 per pack shipping for my zip code but still this is nearly half the prices at Sams/Costco.

Some broadcast DVCAM tapes have memory chips to store camcorder preferences and tape logs. It doesn't apply for consumer camcorders.

MiniDV and DV cassettes can come with a small amount of electronic memory on a chip. Look at the write-protect slider - nearby are four rectangular indents. On a tape with the chip, these are metal contacts.

If I recall correctly, only Sony have ever bothered with the memory. Support for it is fully defined in the DV specification. I don't think it is widely used.

Too bad there's no comparable deal on DVD-RW mini disc for those with mini DVD Camcorders.

Bought 4 packs when I saw "Premium" but realized it may not be the same kind for which I paid $$$ to Best Buy because the salesperson duped me to believe that I should use it to have the best quality HD recording. Although I could not tell the difference using the regular one. I thought I read that never believe the sales people at the electronics stores.

I placed my order anyway even though it included $65 shipping (ordered 10). I then placed another order now after reading that you guys weren't charged and it went through without shipping. I then called Sony to have the shipping charges dropped on the first order, they're working on it. I was going to cancel the first order but heck at that price I kept it...

    Thanks...

Thanks for the tip. That is the tape I have been using since I bought the camcorder a couple of years ago. Even though I haven't taken that much video lately, I couldn't pass up on the deal and bought two packs (16 tapes) - small amount of sales tax but no shipping. Great deal.

It shows $43.32 price on that link now. Could it have been just a 1 day special?

I bet someone dropped the ball and posted the unit price instead (42.32 / 8 = 5.29), but now the mistake has been fixed...

Well, it ain't %5.29 for an 8 pk, but Fry's has them for $24.99, a lot better than $43: http://shop1.outpost.com/product/4796539?site=sr:SEARCH:MAIN_RSLT_PG
Let us know if you actually receive them for that $5.29 NS price. I'm curious to see if they honor it.

Yep...It's recommended to stick with only one brand since different lubricants are used with different mfgs.

This topic looks like a mistake by Sony...lucky you

I just checked my order status. It still reads 4 8pks for $21.16. No other notices yet, but we will see. Definately falls in that catagory "if it sounds too good to be true..."

Sure looks like Sony may have made a mistake. Just checked my credit card site and there is a Sony charge pending for $11.22 for two packs @ $5.29 plus the PA sales tax, so it looks like they are going to honor it. Hopefully they won't just decide to recredit the account and say they are out of stock or something such. Think my previous best price was about $20 for 6 tapes at Fry's a year or so ago when I was visiting in Austin, TX. Thanks again to TheFamilyMan for posting this.

Costco and Sam's usually sell 6 or 8 packs in the $20 range. Brands vary.

Thanks to TheFamilyMan for spotting this deal.

PS: When I got my first MiniDV camcorder, tapes cost ~$20ea.

Thanks for all your appreciation. I need to stock up for a month long vacation to Alaska; we're driving there with our truck and trailer. I was checking the sony site just to see what their current product line was and was not expecting to find any deals, but rather their "retail" prices. I fell out of my chair when I saw this, a price like this was too juicy not to share

I just hope the ebay sharks didn't eat this alive.

Any luck on your orders? Or any response from Sony? My order is "In Progress"

Looks like they will not honor it. Shoot, I thought I can get even with them this time because they did not return the lens filter when they repaired my HC3 in December 2006 after charging me $250 for labor for a camera bought only in August 2006 then broke again for the second time this March 2007. Numerous phone calls, e-mails and a complaint with the Better Business Bureau resulted only in my blood pressure going up. It is only a $25 filter and they acknowledged that it was attached when I sent the camera for repair.

I received an order confirmation and even more Sony spam in my e-mail.

If they give greef on this, it may affect several immediate purchase decisions: an HDV camcorder, a 42-50" LCD display and a laptop computer.

I went and read all of their "fine print" which is extremely lopsided in their favor. Since these orders seem to be in purgatory, I bet they will be cancelled soon. Their general policy includes:
    1. in stock items always ship in 24 hours
    2. you cannot cancel an order for an in stock item (normally)
    3. low-ball pricing errors are not honored
    4. they can limit the number of units purchased
For 3, they will either contact the customer and/or outright cancel the order. In any case, it was worth giving it a shot.
