I uninstalled a trial version of NOD32 antivirus as the only change to my system today and at first I noticed the internal beep PC speaker making noises but didnt think much of it until I tried to play an mp3 and WMP said it cant play it becasue there is a problem with my audio device.

I then tried it in VLC media player and it is just silent.

Then I noticed nothing at all would work with sound! So i ventured into control panel and under sound/audio devices it says there is none installed.......how do I reinstall my audio device which is built into my motherboard???

I then checked device manager and I have found something in that may be the problem.....I dont know what the microsoft kernal system audio is but it apparently has a problem.

My AC97 though it says is working fine which I dont understand.

so here is some screenshots that may assist in the problem solving:

    anyone know whats going on?
Thanks in advance for any help.

All you should need to do is reinstall your MB drivers. You will need to determine the MB model and/or chipset. Then just download and install the latest version. The MB typically has a name and/or model number marked on the PCB or with a sticker.

Make sure that the WINDOWS AUDIO service has been started.

CONTROL PANEL > ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS > SERVICES

Probably on exit, the AV program stopped (or disabled) this service.

  4. You could even go into the device manager and remove it, then select scan for hardware changes. This will redetect the audio and prompt for the driver.

I will try Dv8teds way first and see how I go, then I will search for new drivers as Krispy Kritter suggested.

SLK001, I had a look but it was still enabled.

Can anyone tell me if Microsfot Kernel is likely to be the problem? I dont know what it is but thought my onboard sound was the AC97 realtek thing which it says is fine?

Thank again for all your help.
