If you know any information about interlace specifically and nero encoding, i need help trying to find proper solutions.
background:
I do pro (type) video, of all kinds
For DVD i was using a "pro" DVD recorder, this recorder does all the encoding, a bit of termporal filtering, and makes a proper interlace recording, but doesnt do Nice Menues, and to "chapter" up a dvd requires stopping starting it all correctally.
I have no problem, after convering and authoring hundreds of video, then I duplicate using a tower.
Because of the ease and correctness, i convert and dupe DVDs (home movie junk) for people for dirt cheap. TBCs and DNRs and DVD recordings all based on dedicated MACHINEs without computer.
This week, somebody wants a "chaptered" out DVD and some minor editing, so I figured it was about time to move into COMPUTER based encoding and DVD writing. Still i ONLY need simple menus, and most data will just be Played/watched by the user, they dont need complex stuff, or animated menu stuff, or other garbage that just slows down getting to the video content.
so i fire up NERO6 , and a day later, i have made 6 DVDs all of which have either the intelace messed up, or are progressive, from what i can tell they are ALL progressive.
I have adjusted the "Video Options" for Odd first, Even first, and progressive, all three DVDs look exactally the same.
they all play fine
MOST people would not notice the (to me) severe loss of 60feild intelace.
Because computers dont work with interlace much, they look ok on a computer.
They are not HD, or double layer, or anything complex, just your usual analog NTSC interlaced video done on DVD.
the Players i am testing the finals on, will switch back and forth from progressive , so i know its not the various players.
my "pro" dvd recorder makes a proper interlaced video correct everytime, using IT for comparison, i can see the problem, lots of people can neither see the problem, nor even know what interlace is , luckily you guys do.
The problem:
the videos (as usual) are clutzy moving the camera all over the place, home movie junk.
without the 60Feilds per second, the video Looks jerkey and it looks like a bad frame rate, or like its a foreign conversion.
Because ALL consumer home movie junk is moving all around like blair witch project, interlace is important.
because my OWN videos are of high movement (ex dancing) interlace and interleaved high speed frame rates are important. for weddings, and corporate stuff progressive is ok, but get to the action, or the dancing and stuff, and the clarity of the progressive is lost by the action.
The Original Data
the data that nero is encoding, is DV, and the original is ODD field first
but i have also tried to use the original DV encoder program, to make "compliant" Mpeg-2 videos, and Nero re-converts them, adding more compression artifcats.
Mabey there is a better program to use to do the simple task of encoding the video from DV, and writing a proper interlaced DVD, but unfortunatly these software people, dont seem to know what interlave even isits not in thier "feature" lists.

for an example of simple dvd authoring that doesnt do interlace.
luckily somebody put in this caveat, at the end of a dvd-flick tutorial
---------------------------------
Known bugs (version 1.2.1.3 and lower) When authoring DV AVI files, which were come from digital camcorders, there are no settings in DVD Flick to encode DV files as interlaced video, DVD standard fully supports interlaced video, and FFMpeg also supports interlaced MPEG-2 encoding. DVD Flick makes DVD with progressive frames, and the deinterlacing algorithms are unknown. For progressive video sources everything is fine.
-----------------------------
the changelog has nothing about interlace in it -
If your "pro" DVD recorder is such a 'good' MACHINE, why not keep it, rip the DVD to a computer, demultiplex the video and audio files and use software which just 'works' (cut, join, author) with your files without reencoding?
Suitable software:
Demux: PGCdemux, pvastrumento, projectx vob2mpeg...
Cut/Join: Mpeg2Schnitt or Cuttermaran
Authoring: dvdauthor or MuxMan (with one of the GUIs: dvdstyler, dvdauthorgui or GfD) or dvdlab or TDA (commercial)GUI for dvdauthor:

you mean finish it, then tear it apart and edit mpeg2 files ?
well because if i had it finished in the machine, i would just not worry about it, i have the editing junk in the computer for editing the DV.
so you have to route this stuff through 3 programs to get a dvd finished? nero looked so easy, if it just would have kept the interlace, i would have been done with this project days ago.
funny i have made DVDs for 5 years, and still dont know how to make 1 on the puter
i will check out these authoring programs you mentined, but the interlace is the thing i need.
Tried "easyDVDmaker" same thing, and not even many options to change anything , seems that there is 150 DVD making things, i only need 1 that does interlace -
Well TMPEGs authoring tool kept the video properly interlaced.
it just costs $89
but it sure ripped throught the process in nothing flat, using both cpu cores and all.
wipped out some sorta menus junk with a flick of the wrist.
and made a very nice quality of mpeg2 file for the dvd.
i should have known that Tmpeg would do things right, specially when it comes to cross coding.
knowing tmpeg, its just to bad that they didnt toss in a few filters to mess with too.
i suppose i could support them by paying out the wazoo for thier program, beings they did that free junk for so long. -

how is Ulead for that "activations" cr-p that i love so much?
if Speed was NOT a critical issue (as in it can do work while i sleep or eat)
but Quality of encoding WAS a critical feature, even if it takes 4x as long to do it right (while i am sleeping)
If direct write to the dvd, was not critical because nero can still write a COMPLETLY assembled RTG dvd off the drive , if it follows the correct structure.
If changing the bitrate manually was a feature that is sometimes needed vrses 1-2-4-6hr modes.
if ripping or duping or stealing a dvd was NOT an issue, dont need that
for menus and buttons, i do NOT need animation, i do need thumbs, i often would need to put in my OWN background, as thier choices are somewhat limited, so non complex menu stuff with minor user adjusting.
THEN which one would you plunk down money for, assuming that both are in the $50-100 range.
actually if the program didnt have activations cr-p, i think i would pay an extra $50 just for that -
ULead, Adobe and Sony Vegas all use variations of the Mainconcept MPeg2 encoder that works well for interlace. The low end consumer versions offer less VBR control but the quality seems similar to the higher end products.

well i see now, after getting TOO advanced with tmpeg, that it does have audio filters.
mabey i just havent found the video filters. Things in the program are non-intuitivly placed all over the place.
almost makes me wish for an old dos interface, and a MS type menu system
anyways thanks for everyones help. -
TDA is the best tool for what you're doing. It's a DVD authoring tool. It has a minimum of editing feature, but that's why it didn't mess up your interlace. It can add chapter points to a video and re-encode the audio and that's pretty much it. It can also use your own backgrouds, even animated ones. The button positions and sizes can all be customized too. With newer versions than mine, you can create your own buttons.
