Friends, after two days of struggle I finally got ffmpegX to produce a playable letterboxed video on my PSP. It realy is no rocket science but there is so much info on this forum I did not know where to start...

Therefore, for the unenlighted like me, I compiled a beginners guide on how to start wit a 2.35:1 avi and get a letterboxed AVC.

It covers one-pass transcoding, using the standard 368 x 208 resolution.
