I'm looking to do something like the intros to the www.revision3.com shows, where the videos do flythroughs through the environment. Can I just use after effects to create those effects? Can anyone point me to any tutorials for this?

After Effects can do some 3D work, but it is limited. While it has a 3D space to work in, most of it's elements are still 2D. This does allow you to do some very nice, stylized 3D effects, but not full blown 3D modeling. For that you need some more specific. Ulead have a (relatively) cheap, canned 3D product for doing simple logos and text. Also on the free front is Blender amongst several others. I couldn't find anything at revision to indicate what you are really after, so perhaps a less general link is in order ?

You can do more with it than create canned material, actually a lot more. It has all the basic shapes, ball, square, cone,... etc there's about 5 others. Or you can import a 2-D image and make it 3-D such as adobe AI files. Convert 2-D files like BMP (works well with monochrome) or import .3ds, dirext x models. There's also a freeform deform tool that allows you deform in 3-d so by combining objects you could create just about any shape that can be manipulated in any way.

If you want to learn to do it the way *they* do it, get Maya's free learning edition.

Anybody that can master 3D applications deserves a good job!

Another free alternative is OpenFX. I use it to create some great 3d objects and animations.
Got my retirement plans all set. Looks like I only have to work another 5 years after I die........
