I just want to cut a file in two so I can put it on 2 CD's. Which is the best and least buggy software (ie. sound out of sync). And also is it better to edit the file while in AVI form or mpg form? All opinions are welcome.

I just used TMPGEnc to split a movie. It was quick and easy. I followed the how to under edit on the vcdhelp.com website.

For AVI files use VirtualDub but make sure you have checked "Direct Stream Copy" under both Video and Audio settings. You can check the video/audio sync online and correct it with Audio/Interleaving if necessary. Very fast and reliable.

What about if the file is already converted into an mpg? Or is it better for the quality to do it as an avi first?

Depending on the size, MPEGTOOL works great. It is fast, with no sync problems. It's downside is there is no viewer to see exactly where your cutting it.
