  1. I have a couple of video clips (Doctor Who trailers) downloaded from the net which play as 16:9 - I have ran them through Videoinspector which verifies this.

When I try to convert to 4:3 (keeping aspect ratio at 16:9) with Tempgenc or try to convert to .avi with VD I get a 4:3 file.

Normally with Tempgenc I get a 4:3 file with the video in the middle and black bars at top and bottom. ANy ideas what the problem is likely to be with the new clips stopping this from working; or what more info do you guys need to help?

They are more than likely 1:1 pixel aspect ratio which is different to 16:9 display aspect ratio.
Make sure you set the source pixel aspect ratio to 1:1 not 16:9 in the Advanced Tab and "Full Screen Keep Aspect Ratio" is also selected.
TMPGEnc should detect the proper pixel aspect automatically at 1:1, don't go changing this unless you know it's false.
eg. A poorely done encode with wrong pixel aspect.
