To think that I installed a conventional SATA 300 in my Dell with Vista - when I coulda had a fancy Hybrid Hard Drive.

Oh well, I guess I'll get one of those when Buy, Fry's or Newegg decides to sell them.

Anyway, finally gave up on Vista - It crashed DVD Rebuilder.

I use DVD rebuilder on my vista laptop with no problem. Have you disabled windows defender realtime scanning? This was crashing some programs on me. Works fine now.

Does nothing show in tasman when the local drive starts 'busyin' up'?

We disabled the Indexing Service and it is "better" now. If it does it again, I will turn off some services one at a time to determine which one is the culprit. Task manager is showing only a few processes running so it might be easy to root out the offending program, if any. Thanks.

It does it again! And worse. The busy activity is now longer and more often than before. I turned off Windows Defender and AVG. No luck. I'm thinking this is hardware and not software related.

My Computer>Properties shows the processor is Intel 4300 dual 1.8Ghz (whatever that means) if that will help.

I said it once in this thread... but maybe you missed it:
    get a Hybrid Hard Disk.
    Your problem will be solved.
This behaviour is 'by design' in Vista, because it really is meant to run on HHDs.
If nothing will change in SP1 thats coming out, Vista still will be a 'standard' HD killer (literally).

    What a load of bollocks.

I have Vista Ultimate running on a 1GB RAM + 150GB SATA hard drive. I don't get neverending disk access.

Using a hybrid drive can help with power consumption, hibernate and resume etc. But even a standard hard drive will have sufficient buffer RAM to prevent excessive disk access.
