Hi peoples.
I have a .mov file here (mpg1 muxed) that has audio when played in Quicktime or VLC, but it cannot be extracted in any way shape or form. I have tried to get the audio seperate in 101 ways, but the file must be corrupted somehow.
Does anyone know of any way that I could record the audio while playing back the file?
I suppoose I could do it the crude way of playing back the file in QT, and using the internal mic to record to a new QT Audio Recording. But obviously that is going to give me a fairly awful result.
Anyone out there got any ideas, or even know what I'm talking about?!
Thanks!

Try Audio Hijack.
http://www.rogueamoeba.com/audiohijack/
Alternatively, you might try demuxing and then converting the audio stream. YMMV. -
rumple's right..
AH ( or AH Pro), Wiretap, Snapz Pro,
or iShowU should do it to get the audio
re-captured.
Also I assume that your "101 ways" included
even trying drag/dropping into ffmpegx
and trying to do a "Passthrough" on the audio into
an AIFF? How about opening the Mpeg in MpegStreamclip,
and after fixing timecode breaks, extracting to AIFF?"Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

You must first deMUX the audio and video streams. iSquint
will probably do that for you:
http://isquint.org
If not, pay the $23 (US) for VisualHub.
Then QT Pro will save the audio stream for you.Al Bloom -
if you're going to pay for one application i'd recommend mpeg2works...

actually, I 'd reccomend trying MpegStreamclip for Free first and try demuxing through that first. (free, since it's Mpeg-1, NOT mpeg-2).
If that doesn't do it, then either try iSquint or say screw it and
and take the shortest route-hijack the whole file to .mov
using iShowU ( which i'd pay for)."Everyone has to learn, so that they can one day teach."

Hi,
May I suggest to try with SimpleMovieX ?
This app is able to extract audio from mpeg files and convert it to other formats.
Note that I'm the developer of this app, and if it doesn't work, I'm interesting in getting the file to investigate it further.

Thanks for the responses everyone.
jpschuck: Turns out VLC would not play the file, so exporting it wasn't possible.
AeroQ: I tried SimpleMovieX and the file forced the app to crash/quit out instantly.
pixel zombie: QT Pro isn't able to extract the audio. Or export it. Mpeg2Works wasn't having it either.
TerryJ: ffmpegx (which I use for almost everything, cos it's that good) isn't able to work with the file either. It will convert the video to whatever file I want, but has no success with the audio track. Just bombs out.
willrob: Exporting to AIFF ain't poss.
rumplestiltskin: I used you suggestion of Audio Hijack to achieve the result I was after. Recorded the audio to a new file and put the file back together. Job done.
Thanks again everyone!

As a postscript, this is an example of a program design flaw with Quicktime that still continues to this day. MPEG (1 and 2) files are treated differently than the standard component structure, and in particular MPEG Audio files that are not already demuxed aren't exposed to the usual audio handling path that most all usual audio is. The only current workaround is to demux ahead of time (in an app that can demux MPEG audio). This is true of QT Win and QT Mac.
Was hoping this would have gotten fixed in QTv7. Maybe 8?

Cornucopia,
Wouldn't you say this was a design flaw with the MPEG1/MPEG2 structure rather than with QT?
I've abandoned MPEG1 & MPEG2 due to issues like this. (Also avoiding MKV and other quirky formats.) Frankly, H264/AAC (MP4) is a superior format for most req's. Once you can accept the death of DVD (and the DRM-laden BluRay and HD-DVD), MP4 can become a much more useful standard. -
MPEG? Design Flaw?
Let's see, which containers multiplex their audio and video?
MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, AVI, MOV, MKV, WMV, etc. Basically all of them.
Which ones can multiplex extra tracks/streams of video and audio?
MPEG1, MPEG2, MPEG4, AVI, MOV, MKV, WMV, etc. Basically all of them.
But QT can only see some streams in some containers (has trouble with DV-AVI type1 as well).
It also only sees 1 V and 1 A stream per container (except for its own kind).
Clearly, it is QT at fault. It's great, but still has a long way to go...
