Does anyone have any information on which of these produces the best results when converting a dvd down to one disc. ie - DVD9 to DVD5? Which does a better job? visually and speed (I know speed is down to each machine - but in comparison to each other)

    Many thanks. Eon

  2. I personally think DVDShrink is faster, easier to use and has more options.
BTW:Recode was written by the same person who made DVDShrink.

In my experience picture quality and speed are mutually exclusive. You can have a fast encode which produces poor results or a slow encode which produces good results. I've yet to find an encoder which excels in both.

FabPlatinum is a great program, it is able to bypass the latest protections and is updated all the time but i believe that when it comes to quality output, the only program that beats Recode2 is Rebuilder with a good encoder. Simply put, Recode2 rules.

Recode won't rip Copy-Protected DVDs like DVDFab will. I have never used DVDFab to reduce a movie to DVD-5, so I can't make a side-by-side comparison, but from start to finish, unless you have AnyDVD, DVDfab will be the quicker one-click solution.

    Thanks everyone

Seems that DVDFab Platinum is good for extracting the files (especially good for extracting main movie and keeping menus intact) but for reducing a movie it is back to the debate between Recode 2 or Shrink (Recode 2 being a more updated version of shrink)

    Thanks. Eon

As mentioned already, DVD Shrink has the better encoding quality options and it also outputs conventional files and folders rather than Nero's proprietry format.

  8. I had a baffling experince recently.........could not backup Prime Suspect 5, using any dvd loaded with either DVD fab decrypter or Clone DVD or DVD Shrink, all failed with various errors which I took to be a dodgy source disc. eg: Illegal memory location
I tried Nero Recode with Any DVD loaded and it backed up fine, I'd love to know why.
