If you are converting them to avi to play on a Divx capable player then you probably don't need to resize them bigger than 640 x nnn. The player will do the rest. Bitrate comes down to running time and quality. For a 42 minute TV episode, 350 MB should produce acceptable quality if well encoded. This gives you a video bitrate of around 944 kbps with 128 kbps audio.

If you are converting to DVD then you will get 2 - 3 42 minute episodes to a disc at acceptable quality at full-D1 at a bitrate of around 4300 - 6500 kbps (longer running time, lower bitrate).

If your player cannot playback Xvid type avi files then you will have to convert to mpeg2 and author for DVD. In that case, do not convert to avi first.Read my blog here.
