When I merge identical format AVIs together, AVI1 + AVI2, making AVI3; both fromt the same source movie, same fps/resolution/codec/everything, etc. with no new recompression, changes, etc, why would the latter ½’s (what was AVI2’s) audio get out of sync with the video? My drive is not fragmented. It is not a codec issue. The files are uncompressed. I am using virtualdub. I have confirmed that AVI2's audio is in sync before appending it to the end of AVI1.

This is driving me nuts. It doesn't make any sense. Please help!

It has always happened, and the forums are littered with this issue.

I have found two ways that have always worked for me. Doesn't mean they will work for you.

    1. Virtualdubmod. Open the first video, then append the second. Streams->Stream List. Save Wav. Close Virtualdubmod and restart it. Open first video, then append the second. Streams->Stream List. Disable the current audio. Add->Select the full audio track you created previously. OK. File->Save AVI.

It is long winded, makes little sense, yet it has always worked for me, with AC3 audio as well.

    2. AVI Demux. Open the first, Append the second, save the lot. Fast, Simple.

For both of these techniques, others have reported sync problems. I must simply be blessed, because to date I have not had any real issues. On a few occasions I have had the video at the join point slow down for a second or two, which puts it out of sync at that point, but it then rights itself and the sync is fine.
