Not all players can be "hacked". If there is a known hack, it will be found in the DVD hacks section.

This Bluesky unit plays/reads VCD, SVCD, DVD, DVD-R, MP3, WMA, JPG. Both ".AVI" and ".DivX" files are supported only if they were created by the XviD codec. It is Region Free, so you should not have problems watching DVDs from different countries. Mine has very good "optics" comparable to higher priced players from well know brands. It perfectly reads DVD-R that presents problems in costlier units.

AVI and DIVX files that use DivX codecs are rejected with a "Wrong Content" error, but there is a fix for this, provided you have easy access to a computer with a CD or DVD burner. You simply have to change the file header that contains the FourCC code from DIVX, DIV4, DIV5, DX50, etc. (lower or uppercases are irrelevant) to XVID. This operation can be done easily and quickly with the Nic's FourCC changer utility which is free and easy to find on the Internet; it is included with the XviD codec that is also free and has an Open Source License.

You have to copy the ".AVI" file to your computer's hard disk, disable its read-only attribute (file properties inside the Windows Explorer) and then open it with the FourCC_Changer. If the "FourCC Used Codec" field is already XVID (uppercase or lowercase) you should be able to watch the file in the BlueSky DV865 without any modification, otherwise you can change the field from DIVX, DIV4, DIV5, DX50, etc. to XVID. There is no need to change the "FourCC Description Code" but you can change it to XVID too if you want. Press APPLY and then QUIT; that's all. The file should be already recognizable by the BlueSky DV865. Burn a new or appendable CD-R or DVD-R with the modified file and try it in the BlueSky player. If you have doubts, use a CDRW. Using Nic's FourCC changer should never take just a few seconds. Burning a new CD might take some minutes.

The FourCC change trick works with DivX 4 and DivX 5 coded files. It won't work with DivX 3.11, therefore if you get "DIV3" in the FourCC field changing it to XVID will not fix it; you can try if you want.

There are a few AVI files that Nic's FourCC won't recognize properly. You can try other free utilities like the abcAVI Tag editor or you can use HxD Hex Editor to manually change the FourCC code. Remember that you only need to change four bytes near the beginning of the file. Sometimes opening a problematic ".AVI" file with VirtualDub (another free program) and saving it without any processing (Direct Stream Copy for both audio and video streams) will fix the header in less than one minute and allow the new file to be recognizable by Nic's FourCC.

I don't know why the BlueSky DV865 rejects DivX4 and DivX5 files if it has all the necessary hardware to play them back perfectly. Maybe it is due to a firmware error or perhaps they didn't have the proper DivX license and preferred to ban DivX compatibility. In fact the player's box reads MP4 and XviD but doesn't mention DivX. There is no DivX logo in the player either while other DivX players are proud to show one. The manual does mention DivX somewhere though. I have not been able to find the manufacturer web page. The only official information comes from Carrefour. If you ever find a Firmware for this player please let me know. For the moment, changing the FourCC is the simplest solution I know.

Many different file formats can be converted to XviD coded AVIs using free programs that you can find easily on the Internet. I recommend mplayer and VLC. They can convert MP4, DivX3, QuickTime, Real Time, Flash Video and many others video file formats to XviD avis. This implies a total re-encoding of the file and could easy take a couple of hour or even more depending on our computer and codec setting. The BLUESKY DV865 should recognize the resulting files. Some MP4 files only require a new container but no re-encoding.

High Resolution AVIs are not supported by the DV865 even if they are encoded with XviD, they generate a "HD not allowed" error. You will have to resample them to a proper resolution (horizontal resolution equal or less than 720 pixels) to be able to watch them.

Files with AAC audio streams need them to be converted to MP3 or AC3.

I hope this helps. Good luck!
