So for about a week now i've been learning how to snag the footage off my camcorder onto my computer and now I am trying to help my daughter edit her ' movie ' of her and her friend lip syncing to a song.

She wants to add basic special effects. We are using windows movie maker. The file is saved as an mpeg1 file.

I am not understanding how to do this, I've been reading a lot of guides but I've obviously not seen the right one. Do I need to have the movie split up into little sub movies so that she can add transitions? Wont that make the movie.... stutter?

I am really sorry I am trying to learn this best I can any help and advice is appreciated. I see there are transitions within movie maker she wants to use but I cant seem to figure out how to get this to work.

Do I need to be using a different program, if so .. can you recomend a better free program to use? She's trying to put this together for her and her friends on youtube. Anyway .. help is appreciated thank you for your time.

If there is a guide that I overlooked and you'd like to point it to me that would be good too.

Not many of us use Windows Movie Maker that much, but this info from Microsoft may help: http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/using/moviemaker/create/default.mspx

MPEG-1 output is probably fine for YouTube. If you wanted to output to a DVD with WMM, I would suggest DV format, then use a MPEG-2 encoder to convert to DVD format.

For a little better editor, you might look into MPEG Video Wizard or VideoReDo, or you might try out one of the all-in-one packages from Ulead or similar. Unfortunately good video editors that are easy to use and versatile aren't really cheap or free.

But other members may be able to give you some better editing tutorial links for WMM.

Transitions generally go between clips as a way of joining scenes. Sometimes this means cutting the video up either externally, or within your editor itself. For short films and simple projects, WMM should be enough to get her started. If you want to look at other, low cost alternatives, consider Ulead Video Studio, or Premiere Elements or Vegas Movie Studio. These all have better capabilities than WMM, but also have a slightly higher learning curve.

Here are a couple of sites to get you started with Movie Maker
