  1. I have ripped non-interlaced PAL DVD's to SVCD with relatively low bitrate and still have good quality. But - and here comes the probem - when i try with interlaces PAL DVD's the result is poor quality (blocky), even with high bitrates. I use the folowing programs:
    SmartRipper
    DVD2AVI
    TMPGEnc

What are the correct setting? I have tried swiching field order. I have left it interlaced and tried to de-interlace it.
The best results i got with de-interlaceing (Even-Odd filed) and noise-reduction. But it takes much longer, and the quality is still not satisfactory. There are still blockieness in the high action scenes.

  2. first of all, FORCED FILM ALWAYS OFF in dvd2avi when doing PAL dvds. if the source dvd is interlaced to begin with, it's best to keep the output video as interlaced, rather than 3:2 pulldown (if you see jerkiness when watching rip of TV, that's cuz you selected wrong field order)

  3. I have never used forced film or 3:2 pulldown, as all of my DVD's are PAL (I live in Europe).
How do i keep it interlaced? I have tried to set the source as interlaced and the output as interlaced. And everything else like when i incode non-interlaced. Then I get those horizontal lines in the preview in TMPGEnc and the result becomes very blocky as soon as there is just a little motion.
I checked the fieldorder using Bitrate Viewer. So it should be OK.

  4. troelswi, well..for me it's always been old field first...but i'm not sure if it's the same with you. you should encode a little bit at each bitrate and use cd-rw and test on your standalone dvd player....if you're just playing it on computer monitor, then field order won't make a difference

also, make sure you set motion search to high quality (slow) and what bitrate you using...it may be too low?
