  1. Is there an easy way to demux an mkv file that uses x264 and aac and remux it to an mp4 without recoding the actual streams. I'm sure there is, i just don't know what it is Thanks!

    Use AVIdemux2

    http://www.razorbyte.com.au/avidemux/2.4/SVN/3059/avidemux_2.4_r3059_win32.zip

Note: When you're saving, make sure you add the .MP4 extension to your file name.

  3. actually, i tried that, but it doesn't create valid mp4 files unfortunately.. thx for the answer tho soopa., you're always on top of it.

    it handles the index.

    presents the following screen

then no matter if i say yes or no and allow the process to complete, it gives me an error in quicktime playback and also won't be seen by the xbox 360, play with the zune software, itunes, etc.

Dang. Sorry about that, it seemed so...simple.

Well, the 2 step system isn't terrible.

MKVextractGUI ----> demuxes to raw h264 and aac

    Yamb 1.6 -----> Muxes to Mp4

Your other "challenge" is whether or not the video track in the .MKV file is "Variable Frame Rate" (vfr). But I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that it isn't...

  5. you know, i think the issue may be that it's ac3 audio.. hmm... i'm trying to convert the audio using faac now - i'll post back in a second.. so yah, looks like ac3 audio not aac - my mistake.

nope, that didn't remedy.. i'll try the two part.

Yeah, isn't that a cruel joke... No AC3 in the MP4 container. They thought it was too "old skool".

You might also want to mux the "Created By AviDemux2" .MP4 in Yamb for the sake of curiosity.

This is a former MKV file that I just converted to MP4 with Avidemux, then ran it through the Mux function in YAMB - all you have to do is load the full MP4 and click the mux button. It just reindexes the file for better Mp4 compliance.

Sure man, happy to help out. Just reposted that MP4 above, this time with AAC. I always feel badly for your MP4 troubles.

    Download Nero Digital Audio (freeware)

    http://www.techspot.com/downloads/2851-nero-digital-audio.html

    and this

    ac3tomp4.rar

Unpack all into the same folder and run .bat to process.

  9. same error with the reposted file. I was asking what free tool would be used to convert ac3 to aac - the thing is - it's faster for me to dl stuff and convert the container than it is to rip it myself

    Thanks for the empathy. \
\Btw - the new handbrake works a treat for resolving that other issue i had.. but now the xbox 360 got an h.264 update it's pointless for me to even own the appletv - hello ebay. I wish they announced it 4 days earlier (isntead of three days after i bought the damn appletv)

I really like h.264 as a codec but man - what a pain. I'm starting to wonder if i should just rip to wmv.

See above. You'll be left with an .M4A , which is an AAC in an MP4 Container. Yamb should like that a lot.

I hear you regarding h264. Too many standards, levels, requirements. But such a nice image at low bitrates.

  11. you know i think i'm going to write an extended bat to handle the demux, audo conversion if necessary and the remux... may be the easiest way to go and i notice these are all command line tools...

i can put a pause in to capture user feedback on whether there's ac3 or aac audio... i'm lazy but i am actually an IT manager, so i can do this stuff - i just have to learn the switches and was looking for something couple of button clicks easy - liek the first solution we tried that didn't work. It's converting the audio now - cheers.. i'll check back in a few.. thanks for the help soopa, you tha man. Where do you live, i owe you a beer

demuxed, converted audio with your bat

    remuxed with yamb, same error.

Apparently i am going ot have to try another source.

Thing is - xvid4psp (great program) can read and convert this file.very very odd.... lol@nome- i'll have to look into some amazon beer of the month somethin.
