I posted a topic on here a few days ago asking for some software to help with
    1. downloading youtube videos from the net
    2. converting youtube videos to a format i can work easier with (unless not necessary)
    3. save only certain parts of the video and trash the rest

-i only want to save about 30 seconds of a 2 minute video from youtube

the problem is when i go to convert the youtube downloaded file, it says it cant recognize the file
all it says under properties is type:file???

For downloading videos from youtube I like to use a program called flashfavorite: http://www.pipisoft.com/
the program offers a free trial, after that you will need a registered copy.

If you use firefox web browser there are a few add-ons that allow you to download flv & swf files directly from your web browser, get firefox and add-ons from http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/

there is also a way to copy video filename from IE cache, which apparently is the same as downloading, haven't tried this method tho.

To convert an flv or swf file you may use TotalVideoConverter or Winmpg video converter. I prefer to convert to avi format.

avi's can be edited using vdub

i use super to convert them ( mainly for my cell phone ) it has timer options that can allow you to convert only the section you want..

super does a good job of converting flv files, sometimes i just convert the whole file then do my cuts on the the converted avi or 3g2 file

Yeah, I seem to have some Youtube downloading probems as well.

When I used to download the videos on FireFox, all I needed to do was right-click Download and click "Save Link As...", but for some reaon it doesn't give that option anymore.

Instead it just shows "Bookmark This Link", "Copy Link Location", "Porperties", and "Download Video" (which displays the message "Sorry but we dont have support yet for downloading videos from the page you have selected").

So, basically I'm lost on how FireFox VideoDownload works on YouTube now.

    Does anyone understand this?

Here's the best way I've found so far to do it using Firefox and XP:

Locate your Firefox cache. Mine's at: "C:\Documents and Settings\YourName\Local Settings\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\default.e12\Cache". I've saved a link to it on my desktop so I can get to it easily. If you have trouble finding it there are some tips on Firefox's pages somewhere.

It makes things easier if you clear the cache before you download the video: Click "Tools... Options... Advanced, (Network tab)", then click "Clear Now" in the cache box. Check that your cache size setting is big enough. Mine was set to 30MB by default. Youtube video takes up about 2.5MB per minute.

It helps if, in Explorer, you set "View" to "Details" and click on the "Size" tab to sort by size, but it's not necessary.

When cleared, there should be 4 files in your cache: _CACHE_001_, _CACHE_002_, _CACHE_003_, and _CACHE_MAP_. (Hit F5 at any time to refresh the display). As your video loads in Youtube, new files will appear as they are cached from the Youtube site. As the video file size grows, it will go to the top or bottom, depending on whether your size column is sorting ascending or descending. You can watch it grow in your Explorer window by hitting F5. When Youtube's buffer line is full, the video is all in this cached file. The filename will be random and have no extension.

Copy it out to your desktop or wherever, rename it and give it an .flv extension.

If you didn't clear your cache before you started, you can still find the file by sorting the cache by file size and looking at the "date modified" column and guessing which one it is.

If you can't find your cache, there's another method I've described here:

    https://forum.videohelp.com/viewtopic.php?p=1686101#1686101

If you're using Internet Explorer, the post directly beneath that one describes how to do it with that.

As the other posters have stated, there are several other ways to download (some are OK, some ain't; I have found the cache method the most reliable) or convert them to another format (xvid AVI, etc.). For conversion I use Vdubmod via avisynths's "directshowsource" function. There's plenty of tips scattered around Videohelp on how to do this if you need them. Vdubmod allows you to use filters (deblocking comes in handy for youtube) when you convert them, and also lets you cut out parts you don't want.

    Good luck.

Or you can just install this add-on into firefox
    https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/2390

    1 download to HD
    2 open firefox add-on box (TOOLS>ADD-ONS)
3 drag and drop file into box
    4 restart firefox - done

your doing rmvb its hit& miss, my success rate is about 50%,

i avoid the files as much as possible

have you tried to play the file that was created, how far a long in the conversion did it get

try setting super to start at 1 second after the point where it died and continue to the end, giving you 2 files, missing only 'one second' of video

Windows Explorer : Tools->Folder Options : View tab : Uncheck Hide extensions for known file types.

You should now see your videos (and other files) with the three (or more) letter extension. So your flv files should movie.flv
If they aren't, hit F2 (rename) and add the .flv to the end of the file name.
    Read my blog here.

  17. Once you have the .flv file, use the flv player to view it:

    http://www.download.com/FLV-Player/3000-2139_4-10467081.html

...if it plays, use SUPER to convert it
