  2. Hi, David, welcome to the forums.

Audio issues are a very common problem with "clean installs" of XP -- manufacturers change drivers all the time and more often than not I've had to load a third-party driver to get the sound working on the machines we support (I'm tech support for a university).

I noticed in your specs that you don't know your motherboard make and model? Somewhere on the board is gonna be some name and some series of numbers that'll help us figure out who made your system, and from there it's not too hard to chase down the right drivers for you. This assumes the sound chip is on the motherboard -- if you have a separate audio card, get the name off it and we can look that up.

You could try to download SIW from this address

It will give you quite a lot of information about your computer.

  6. Try this link:

    http://www.softwarepatch.com/utilities/cmedia-9738.html

C-media makes the sound chip for a bunch of different motherboards, though, who may tweak their own version of the driver; this is a generic version so it may not match your specs exactly, but hopefully you can at least get some sound out.

  8. Here's a link for downloads for the Acer 8000:

Under links for "Audio Driver," try this one -- "Audio Cmedia Onboard driver for Windows XP"
