    Not that I have ever uploaded anything, but as I understand it, the video is always re-encoded by the server. So you probably don't want to convert to flv, but rather some higher quality intermediary format.

    WAX or ZS4 are free. You can do simple assemble editing with virtualdub, but it's not ideal. You could even use Windows Movie Maker, which you have free in XP. The school I look after uses it in grades 5 - 6 to do basically the same thing. When you have finished editing, output as DV avi, then use Virtualdub to convert it to Xvid. If you look at YouTubes requirements, I believe they like Xvid at 100 MBs or less for uploading.

    From the YouTube help files

    We recommend the following settings:

    * MPEG4 (Divx, Xvid) format
    * 320x240 resolution
    * MP3 audio
    * 30 frames per second

    Resizing your video to these specifications before uploading will help your videos look better on YouTube.
    This, they say, will give you the best quality conversion at their end.
