  1. It's hard to tell from the pix but I believe the second cable isn't a component video cable, it's just a gold-plated version of the cable you already have (S-Video out, composite video out, and left/right audio). As such, I hardly think it's worth shelling out sixty bucks for.

I noticed your camcorder does have DV out (iLink) so there may be some options there for feeding directly into a big-screen TV.

  2. Again, this is still hard to tell from the pix but I don't think that'll work with your camcorder -- if you dig around in the specs there's a note that this is "especially for HD camcorders," and when I looked at the HD page, it seems that that there are two multi-function output jacks on those camcorders, one for video/audio (like yours) and an additional jack for component out.

So it looks like this cable (the HD one) is for such a camcorder, and I only see one mulit-function output jack on your camcorder.

Sony camcorders don't output component analog. Some models only have composite (yellow) out. Most have S-Video (Y/C).

What are you trying to connect to?

All models have IEEE-1394 out for high quality DV connection to a PC.

I didn't think so either, but apparently the HD versions do, at least according to the page he linked to -- the HDRUX5, for $1,199 (US or Canadian?), has:

    NPUTS / OUTPUTS

    Component Video Out
Multi AV (Video Out / S-Video Out / Audio Out)
    Remote (Stereo MiniMini)
    USB Terminal (mini-B/Hi-Speed)
    HDMI Terminal
    DC IN

Or maybe that's just the Canadian models?

He said he has a MiniDv DCRHC26.

Broadcast level camcorders usually have component analog out but not SD consumer models.

HD is a different class. Most are moving to HDMI to save all the analog circuitry.

And the HD camcorder I noted costs less (in today's dollars, anyway) than my old Panasonic tube camera (single tube!) and portable VHS VCR that I bought back in ... '84? ... and used to drag around to air shows and thought, "This sure beats Super 8mm film!"

Man, the world changes fast nowadays.

    The description says
"Designed especially for 1080i Handycam camcorders, the VMC-30VC allows you to easily send high resolution video to your television’s component video hook-ups."

    You don't have a 1080i Handycam camcorder.

  8. The camcorder is hooked up to my editor. So I'm just using it to hook to a TV for playback.

But, since After Effects can also talk to the camera, I wanted to get a better quality connection besides the crappy composite RCA.

S-Video is better, but I notice that the component cable, even though it's designed for the HD version of this camera, has the exact same connection. I can probably safely assume that it will work.

I was gonna try the component cable, but there's no audio on it. So the reason I was wonder if a) Would the cable work, and b) is there a version with audio.

    a) If you think this undocumented feature is "probably" going to work let us all know. Why wouldn't the Sony product manager hype this? He may lose his job over this.

    b) Does your manual say there is audio on that connector? Each model differs for breakout.

If you want component to your monitor, use an ADVC-300 up or an HDV camcorder or something like the Panasonic HVX-200.
