  1. Hi!

Is there any software that I can use to analyze a DVD for quality. I'm not sure how much info you can get out of a finished DVD but I have a scenario where I would like to compare a commercial DVD to a DVD from an ad agency.
Dream scenario would be to get info like resolution, bitrate, codec, compression methods etc. etc.

  2. Codec is easy. If it is a standard DVD it is always MPEG2

Resolution only has 3(4) standard allowed resolutions. In the USA for example 720 by 480 or 704 by 480 which is full res.
    352 by 480 = 1/2 D1
352 by 240 = not likely to be used in a commercial DVD as it is really VCD quality.

And then there is the question of how many passes during the encoding to MPEG2 were done.

Best Way to analyze quality is to use a really god TV and player and watch. No software that I've seen can detect a good encode from a bad encode. You can guess that a low bitrate will look worse than a high bitrate, but not always true.

  3. G-Spot will give a very complete analysis of resolution, bitrate, etc.
Open the .VOB files in it.

Commercial discs also have better source than anything you'll have, and most use better encoding hardware and software. You're not making direct comparisons.
