I created my first DVD that will play successfully on my Home DVD player with many thanks to you all for your help. However, the picuture is somewhat grainy. I am not really complaining, but I just want to double check that this is too be expected from a VCD. I converted the the video portion of the file using TMPGEnc to the following:

    a) Stream type: MPEG-1
    b) Size: 352x240 -> Should this be larger?
    c) Aspect ration: 29.97 fps
    d) Rate control mode: Constant
    e) Bit Rate 1150000 bit/sec.

Are there any changes I can make to the settings to improve the picture quality? Also, is there better software available to convert the video?

    Regards....

  2. Yea, that's pretty much vcd right there.. if you want better picture quality though, you might wanna play around with the SVCD format.

  3. Umm.. if you want better picture quality you need to start with higher quality source material.

  4. Yoo, You got two first price answers.

VCD only look good when the input video quality is very high.
Typically DVD rip, or SVHS or Hi8 Video.

SVCD by nature use a much higher bit rate and mpeg2 compression,
plus 480x480 resolution, and thus make beetr quality video.

But, the fact is you going to loss some quality to encode video.
If your video source is not great to start with, the captured quality
go down hill pretty fast. It is worst than proportional, because the compression
method can't make decision that well.

  5. YOu could try seeing if your player will play xvcd's. My home player won't play svcd's so thats what I have played with. With xvcd's you can play around with the bitrate, so instead of 1150k, it could be 2500k, also instead of the vcd compliant 352 by 240 you could try 680 by 480, or whatever. First you need to see if your player can handle it, a lot can, just do a sample xvcd on a cd-rw or something and play around with your settings.

I use either 2150 or 2500 for this setting. The results are much better. Als use noise reduction at the default values.
