    Hi folks

sorry about this lame question, but i'm struggling a bit here.

I'm trying to encode a couple of DV footage to mpeg2 using tmpgenc xpress. I want to keep it interlaced, and let my directshow codecs handle the job of deinterlacing it afterwards, during playback.

But i'm a bit lost here. What should i specify on the "clip addition - filters" menu?

Keep interlaced (no deinterlace) or Deinterlace when necessary?

When i click on no deinterlace a popup window tells me this:
"If you set to "Keep interlaced", framerate change, progressive mode change, field order, etc. will not fonction properly.
Do you wish to change this setting?
If you set "Deinterlace when necessary only" as default, unnecessary deinterlace are avoided."

So, what exactly does this mean? I'm getting a bit confused as on the later menu "Format" there's also a "Display mode" option: Interlace or Progressive.

Does this overwrite the previous setting?

Hope you guys (and ladys) will be willing to give me a spare hand on this one, cheers

If your interlaced video already has target pixel resolution (720x576), you can use 'keep interlaced' setting in deinterlace filter but you have to disable other filters (like resize) at this (that warning is just a reminder to do it) and e.g. only use PAL output template for a PAL input. Resize filter in XPress cannot be unchecked but it can be configured to not resize. You can leave default settings 'fullscreen' and 'keep aspect ratio' for an input video with PAL pixel resolution, then it will not resize if you select PAL template for encoding.

    wow sounds a tad complex.

Basically i'm not resizing (keeping it at good old 720x576), and my footage is pal.

So in other words, the "deinterlace when necessary" check means it won't deinterlace at all if i set the later setting to interlaced on the "format menu"
